Join PBKACA member and Chicago Architecture Foundation docent Robin Simon for the 6th almost-annual PBKACA architecture tour. This time we will be heading south to Hyde Park for a tour of the University of Chicago campus.
Come explore the early Collegiate Gothic roots of the university campus in the original quadrangles, the “march of mid-century modernism” along the Midway and the recent, breath-taking architectural additions. We’ll see building designed by many world-renowned architects of the last 100+ years including Henry Ives Cobb; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Eero Saarinen; Mies van der Rohe; Helmut Jahn and Jeanne Gang.
The University of Chicago—or "Grey City"—was emerging simultaneously with and in close proximity to the “White City” of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition on the south side of Chicago in the late 19th century. Sometimes considered Chicago's "twin progeny," these two "cities" were instrumental in changing the perception of Chicago from a city of barbarous materialism to one of refinement and culture.
The tour is free for current PBKACA members and their one guest. All others are $5 per person. Register now or send a check to PBKACA at P.O. Box 641121, Chicago, IL 60664-1121.
Please RSVP to Robin at robinsimonsez@gmail.com (even if you register on PayPal) with your name, number of people, and your cell phone number (we have had to call people due to rain in the past.)
